Next in line for bailout money–Zoos and Aquariums

Zoo and Aquariums Look for Slice of Stimulus Pie

Brad Haynes in WSJ–Washington Wire

As the jostling continues over a stimulus package containing upwards of $850 billion in federal spending, it’s hard to find a trade group without a strong opinion about where the money should go.

The latest pitch comes from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, touting the “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects at the nation’s zoos and aquariums that should be eligible for stimulus funding, they argue. The organization has even adopted President-elect Barack Obama’s rhetoric twinning short-term jobs with long-term environmental concerns.

“Investment in these institutions will pay-off twice, first in immediate job creation, and second, in the environmental education of our children for years to come,” AZA President Jim Maddy said in a statement. “Zoos and aquariums are woven into the fabric of American life.”

The organization claims that its roughly 200 institutions generate $7.6 billion in economic activity every year and help to keep 100,000 people employed.

AZA spokesman Steve Feldman cited new elephant exhibits in Los Angeles and Cleveland and a polar bear exhibit in Providence, R.I., as examples of major new infrastructure projects ready for federal dollars. Other, less glamorous projects include the aging plumbing systems in parks like the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Some major zoos, like the ones in Dallas and Los Angeles, are fully municipal departments. But most involve some form of public/private partnership, with cities often controlling land and infrastructure while private societies maintain the staff and operations.

We knew it was coming. The floodgates are open and everybody wants their share of “free” money from DC.
