Israeli Ground Offensive in Gaza

Digg!
#TCOT #diggcons

After 8 days of aerial attack on Hamas positions in Gaza, the terrorist organization refused to stop its rocket and mortar attacks against Israeli civilians.  In an effort to secure the safety of its citizens, Israel has put boots on the ground and surrounded Gaza City in a mission to destroy Hamas’ military capability to threaten Israelis in the southern villages and towns.

At the moment, it appears the United States may be the only friend Israel has.  Governments around the globe are condemning Israel’s ground offensive (Arab nations, Asian nations, Turkey, India, Greece, Venezuela, Cuba, European nations, and I’m sure there are plenty more), but President Bush and even high ranking Democratic Senators of both parties still maintain Israel is within its rights.  The United States seems almost alone in condemning the Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians.  Apparently Israeli deaths don’t bother the international community.

Anyone who has served in the combat arms of the military understands this is not what Israel wants.  The Gaza Strip is a tiny piece of land, about 140 square miles, populated by approximately 1.5 million Palestinians.  In other words, it’s quite crowded.

Urban warfare is the most dangerous fighting there is for an attacking force, because the enemy can hide almost anywhere.  Hamas certainly knows the urban areas of Gaza better than the Israeli ground soldiers who will be responsible for clearing buildings and locating weapons caches.  This is a guerilla fighter’s choice of battlefield.  What I’m getting at here, is that Israeli commanders and politicians don’t desire this phase of the conflict, but obviously consider it essential to accomplishing their mission–”to significantly disable the terrorist infrastructure of Hamas and produce lasting change in the security predicament affecting residents of southern Israel.”

According to news reports, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) haven’t yet entered Gaza City or other large urban centers in Gaza.  Instead, they’ve surrounded Gaza City and divided the country into three parts.  They cleared the northern village of Beit Lahia, from which most residents had already fled, and have most likely formed a defensive front somewhere between that village and Gaza City to keep Hamas rocket and mortar brigades from leaving the city to fire their weapons into from the north. Israeli forces have also been reported to have reached Netzarim to the south of Gaza City.

The last thing the Israelis want to do is enter densely populated Gaza City. Let’s zoom in and get a closer look at what they’d be fighting.

In dense urban areas such as this, tanks and other armored vehicles are channeled down narrow streets lined with hideouts where the enemy can lie in wait and attack at close range. Ground troops must enter and clear every building–an extremely difficult and dangerous endeavor. Effectively, the Israeli advantage over Hamas guerilla fighters is greatly reduced in this environment. Only Hamas relishes the thought of fighting on the streets of Gaza City.

If the IDF enters the city proper, it’s only because its generals and Israel’s politicians see no other alternative to end Hamas rocket and mortar attacks on Israeli citizens.

Today’s news from Gaza reports the IDF is now tightening the noose around the city, engaging Hamas militants in the suburbs to the north. Troops stationed to the south of the city are preventing resupply and reinforcements from that direction.

Militarily, the preferrable course of action would be to set a perimeter and beseige the city, but it might take several weeks to force a surrender. International pressure that would mount in response to the certain humanitarian crisis that would develop likely makes takes this option off the table for Israel. It’s doubtful that even US politicians who still support Israel would continue in supporting such a strategy, and Israel is plagued by uncertainty of what course the new Obama administration will take after 20 January when the new President will be sworn in.

Barack Hussein Obama has remained eerily quiet on the subject since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on Hamas. If he supported Bush’s position, it would greatly ease Israel’s mind and give her military more flexibility in strategy and tactics. There’s little doubt Israeli leaders believe they may be “up against the clock” to wrap up the campaign, or at least accomplish as much as they can by the inauguration.

Hamas could have avoided this entire conflict by recognizing Israel’s right to exist and denouncing terrorism.  Instead, it fired rockets and mortars at Israeli civilians.  Now, the terror organization is giving its conditions for a cease fire, but they offer nothing to eliminate the threat to Israel.  Hamas’ conditions (end to Israeli offensive, end blockade and open all borders) fail to satisfy Israeli objectives and would almost certainly guarantee a restart of its attacks on Israel in the future.

Good luck and God speed Israel.

Barack in Limbo

by Michael Reagan on Townhall.com

As he stands on the sidelines, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on in the world, President-elect Barack Obama opts out of the game by proclaiming that there’s only one president at a time.

That’s another way of saying, “Let George do it,” when the Middle East erupts in violence, the economy continues to slump, and the governor of his state defies demands that he step down.

His almost nonchalant approach to the turmoil around him has thus far protected him from adverse reactions from his real base — the media — but that immunity from harsh criticism has not extended to his political base, the far left. They are after him hammer and tongs.

Hypocrisy in the Obamedia

Obamedia*–the highly liberally biased Mainstream Media (MSM) whose fascination with (adoration of?) President-elect Barack Hussein Obama suffocates all traces of objectivity in reporting the accomplishments, struggles, whereabouts, activities, vices, etc. of the President-elect. This group of supposedly detached professionals is also easily identified by its hatred and vitriolic rhetoric regarding any conservative person or ideal, especially President Bush.

*I first saw this term in Michelle Malkin’s column discussing/disclosing the obvious bias in the reporting of the workout habits of President Bush vs. President-elect Barack Hussein Obama.  The above definition is my own and Ms. Malkin may define it differently.

Here are a couple of teaser excerpts for her exceptional column:

And when Obama feels better, the skies will part, the sun will shine (in moderate, environmentally-correct, non-global warming-inducing amounts, of course) and peace will reign worldwide!

and

Fit Republican president = Selfish, indulgent, creepy fascist.

Fit Democratic president = Disciplined, health-conscious Adonis role model.

Now, you might be wondering about my obvious bias in the other direction.

Please note the subtitle of this site. My intention is to mislead no one while serving as a counterbalance to the constant barrage of left-wing propaganda disbursed by the MSM on a daily basis.

In that spirit, I can’t help but notice how left-wing reporters enamored with Obama can write starry-eyed essays describing his workout habits and the benefits Americans will receive from their in-tip-top-shape new President, but evidently forget the nasty little unhealthy habit that receives virtually no attention from the MSM–smoking.

You remember smoking. The killer of men, women, children, dogs, cats, hamsters, flowers, bees, trees, pigs, goats, chickens, and any other harmless, innocent creature that engenders sympathy in a majority of voters in America.

Didn’t President Clinton attack and encourage attacks by others on the evil tobacco companies in an effort to rid the world of all evil? Didn’t our government increase taxes that more than doubled the price of cigarettes because they caused all the problems in America? Hasn’t smoking been banned in public buildings, many public places, even U.S. Navy ships because it’s so detrimental to the health of the American people?

For all the evils credited to smoking by the Democrats, our President-elect’s habit of lighting up doesn’t even deserve a mention in an article describing his healthy lifestyle.

If you ever had any doubt about the objectivity of the MSM, or if you ever thought it leaned conservative, this should definitely convince you otherwise.

Israel responds to Hamas rockets

Israel was once again forced to lauch attacks against Hamas targets in Gaza yesterday, and the international reaction is predictable.  Calls from around the globe for Israel to stop its “aggression” are the typical response of the international anti-Semitic coalition.

The same people, nations, and groups who so loudly decry Israel’s military response are those who sat idly by as Hamas militants fired rocket after rocket, mortar after mortar into Israel.  These one-way pacifists see nothing wrong with Palestinian (or other Arabs) killing Israeli civilians, but consider every Palestinian death an outrage.

President Bush has rightly stated that Israel has the right to defend itself against attacks by the terrorist organization that runs the Gaza Strip.  Unfortunately, among world leaders only Britain and Germany have joined Bush in recognizing Hamas’ role in initiating military action.  President-elect Barack Hussein Obama has yet to comment on the current conflict, and that leaves many wondering how he will address the issue once he occupies the White House later this month.

Israel has doubts about soon-to-be President Obama’s administration, even though he emphatically stated he’ll continue to support Israel’s right to defend itself.  With former President Carter consistently spewing anti-Israeli rhetoric and former President Clinton’s willingness to trade Israeli security for “peace”, it’s no wonder.

The fact is, until militant Palestinian factions and other Arab nations accept Israel’s existence as a reality, there will be no peace.  Nor should there be.

Why no pardon for heroic border agents?

Yesterday, Bush issued 19 pardons and commuted the sentence of a convicted crystal methamphetamine dealer.  But two US Border Patrol agents who shot an illegal alien in the act of smuggling 750 pounds of marijuana across the border still sit behind bars.

Earlier this month, Border Patrol agents were under fire by more dealers smuggling drugs into our country, but did not return fire.  The case of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean has immobilized those whose task is to secure our southern border.

The President has received requests to commute the sentences of these two heroic agents from Senators on both sides of the aisle.  An appeals court judge has publicly stated the judge and prosecutor in the case may have overreacted.  Still, Bush would rather commute the sentence of a convicted crystal meth dealer than these two who shot a drug smuggler in the act of penetrating our border with illegal drugs.

I guess the crystal meth dealer will have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, but Ramos and Compean will continue to rot in jail for defending our country’s border, protecting our children from the poison imported on our southern border.

If you can’t understand how Bush can let this travesty continue, contact the White House and ask for justice for these two American heroes.

Maybe then our Border Control agents won’t feel intimidated by our own government and will once again be able to defend themselves against the forces arrayed against them along the Rio Grande.

What the left doesn’t want to remember…

A Brief History of Bush’s Time

By Randall Hoven at The American Thinker

The current narrative of the Bush Presidency is that it is a failure (believed by 107 of 109 historians surveyed) and that George W. Bush is the worst President in history (believed by 61% of those surveyed historians). Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said, “The president already has the mark of the American people — he’s the worst president we ever had.”

That’s one narrative. I have another.

Despite being handed one of the worst situations in history from President Clinton, and being fought tooth and nail by his opponents in government and the media, literally from the day of his election, President George W. Bush persevered to restore prosperity at home and to make the US and the world more free and secure.

5 Convicted of US Terrorism Plot

The 5 radical Muslim immigrants who plotted to attack Ft. Dixon, NJ were convicted today.

Jordanian-born cab driver Mohamad Shnewer; Turkish-born convenience store clerk Serdar Tatar; and brothers Dritan, Eljvir and Shain Duka, ethnic Albanians from the former Yugoslavia, who had a roofing business were convicted of conspiring to kill military personnel and now face life in prison.

The initial investigation was sparked by a patriotic Circuit City clerk who alerted FBI agents when members of the group dropped of a video of them firing assault rifles and shouting jihad slogans.  The FBI then used informants to infiltrate the group which led to the arrests.

Defense attorneys argued the group was never serious, it was all just talk.  But the criminal complaint against the convicted terrorists claims the group:

  1. conducted firearms training in rural Pennsylvania
  2. traveled to Ft. Dix to conduct surveillance
  3. traveled to Dover AFB in Dover, Delaware to conduct surveillance
  4. traveled to the United States Coast Guard Building in Philadelphia to conduct surveillance
  5. acquired a map of Ft. Dix
  6. collected weapons including handguns, shotguns, and assault rifles
  7. reviewed terrorist training videos
  8. conducted tactical training in Cherry Hill, NJ
  9. ordered fully automatic machine guns

Sure sounds like they were serious to me!

Vice-president elect Joe Biden believes terrorists like these were created by our foreign policy.  Biden places blame for terrorist acts such as these on Bush and Cheney.  Rather than pen animals like this at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he wants to close down the terrorist detention compound.  The following video is an interview Biden gave George Stephanopoulis in which he said exactly that.

I criticize Bush for many of his policies, but I thank God he got this one right!  Lives were spared because we caught these animals before they could rain terror inside our borders.

Fred Thompson: Ask not what your country can spend for you,…

…but what you can spend for your country.

If you’re one of those who believes all the government “experts” and politicians touting the bailouts and stimulus packages, you can learn something from this lecture by Sen. Fred Thompson.

If you’re like me and already believe the current and soon-to-be administrations’ policies are going to leave our children with a crushing debt that will be impossible for them to repay, you’ll enjoy the wit and sarcasm Thompson uses to present our argument.

The video is more than 8 minutes long, so you may want to let it load then come back and replay it.  But it’s well worth the wait.  Enjoy.

The only thing that’s ever going to get our economy back on track is for Americans to once again embrace the idea of personal responsibility.  If you screw up, you suffer the consequences.

To hear the politicians today, you’d think there’s chaos in the streets and people dropping dead like flies in a fumigated apartment.

If we’ll learn from the mistakes that brought us to this point, and commit ourselves to not repeating them, our economy will come back stronger than ever.  There’s no doubt it’s going to be painful for some, especially those who’ve grown accustomed to spending more than they earn.  But if we choose this path, our economy will be fundamentally sound, not a castle built on sand.

It’s really simple.  We either bear this burden now, or we push it down the road for our children to inherit.  Then the problem will be many times worse than it is.

Do we want our children to inherit an economy that can be toppled by the slightest breeze?  Or, do we want to leave them a solid foundation on which to build their future?

Senator Shelby (R-AL) to President: No Pardon for Lindh

Press Release

December 19, 2008

Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) asked President Bush not to pardon John Walker Lindh, an admitted Taliban supporter involved in the death of CIA officer Johnny Michael Spann.

“I am outraged that some individuals are pushing for a pardon of John Walker Lindh,” said Shelby.  “Lindh, an admitted member of the Taliban army, was involved in the death of CIA officer and brave Alabamian, Johnny Michael Spann.  Lindh allowed the Taliban to take the life of an American citizen who fought to defend our nation in the War on Terror.  It is my sincere hope that the President will deny any effort pushed by Lindh or his family to shorten his 20-year sentence.”

Lindh admitted to supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan and in February 2002, Lindh was indicted by a federal grand jury on ten changes:

• Conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals;

• Two counts of conspiracy to provide material support and resources to designated foreign terrorist organizations;

• Two counts of providing material support and resources to terrorist organizations;

• Supplying services to the Taliban;

• Conspiracy to contribute services to al Qaeda;

• Contributing services to al Qaeda;

• Conspiracy to supply services to the Taliban;

• Using and carrying firearms and destructive devices during crimes of violence.

Lindh pled guilty to charges of providing services to the Taliban and carrying illegal explosives in July, 2002.  Lindh was sentenced to 20 years without parole.

On November 24, 2008, Senator Shelby wrote a letter to the President outlining his position against a pardon for John Walker Lindh.
