Weekly Radio Address 12-13-08

In all the excitement last week with the Illinois Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich charged with trying to sell Obama’s vacated Senate seat, I missed the radio address this week.

Better late than never, here it is:

Not surprisingly, the President-elect never mentions his corrupt pal being arrested.  He pretty much rehashes what he’s been saying for weeks–let’s stay focused on the mortgage crisis.

No mention of the Big 3 bailout either.  His entire message boils down to you’re hurting and I’m the healer.  I have no idea how I’m going to heal you, but you can believe I’m going to heal.

Funny thing is he’s still not offering any specific details on HOW to fix the problem.  Once again he says he’s directed his team to develop a “bold plan” to remedy the situation.  Translation–he still doesn’t have a clue how to fix the problem.

He did announce his pick to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Shaun Donovan.  The President-elect claims Mr. Donovan will bring new ideas and solutions, but it seems he’s another Obama appointment with strong Washington ties.  He was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multifamily Housing at HUD until 2001.

Mr. Donovan also worked as managing director of its FHA lending and affordable housing investments at Prudential Mortgage Capital Company until 2004, when he was appointed Commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.  In other words, he was directly involved in creating the current mortgage crisis.

Scandals before he even takes office and his long-touted change consists of Cabinet appointments with strong Washington ties.  Repeatedly telling us his team is working on a plan, but offering no concrete details of what it will consist of.

Is this really what voters thought they were getting when they elected this guy?

RNC Chairman Statement on Need for Illinois Special Election

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released the following statement today.

“It’s extremely disappointing that Democratic leaders in Illinois are ignoring bipartisan calls for a special election to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat.  Considering the scandal surrounding Governor Rod Blagojevich’s administration, a special election is the only way to credibly fill the seat.  I hope that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan puts good government before partisan politics, and will heed Senator Durbin’s call for a special election.”

To avoid the possibility that Illinois voters may choose to elect a Republican Senator to take

Blagojevich

Blagojevich

Obama’s vacated seat, Democrats in the Illinois Legislature are attempting to block a special election.

Even though both prominent Democrats (including Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL)and Republicans have called for a special election in the wake of recently exposed criminal activity of the state’s Democratic Governor, Rod Blagojevich, Illinois state Democratic legislators are seeking to deny their constituents an opportunity to vote for change.  Apparently, they approve of the status quo.

This article, from the Chicago-Sun Times’ blog, reports 2/3 of Illinois voters favor a special election.  Evidently, Democrats in the Illinois legislature don’t really care what the voters think!

If you’re an Illinois voter who wants a choice in who represents you in the US Senate, let your legislators know.  Contact them and tell them enough with partisan politics, the voters want a choice

Bailout payout tops $8 trillion

by Jeanne Cummings at Politico

Your Kid in a Few Years

Your Kid in a Few Years

As the holiday season commences, it’s worth taking stock of the last gift that President George W. Bush and the 110th Congress have left for U.S. taxpayers.

It’s a package of about $8.7 trillion dollars’ worth of potential taxpayer commitments for loans, guarantees and other bailout goodies for businesses and distressed homeowners.

Amid the tissue paper:

• More than $1.5 trillion in Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. loan guarantees, including a $139 billion assist to the lending arm of General Electric Corp.

• $1.8 trillion in cash, tax breaks and loan guarantees doled out from the Treasury Department to taxpayers, financial institutions and credit companies.

• $300 billion for homeowners from the Federal Housing Authority.

• $25 billion in assistance for auto companies from a program overseen by the Energy Department, which is separate from the bailout proposal that tanked last week in the Senate.

• And $5 trillion worth of new money, loan guarantees and loosened lending requirements from the Federal Reserve Bank.

Mainstream Media Loathe to Cover Arson at Palin’s Church

Wasilla Bible Church

Wasilla Bible Church

The ATF has now joined the investigation of the Wasilla Bible Church arson. The agency reported accelerants were placed in several locations around the church, including the entrances.

Although it’s possible this fire was unrelated to the Governor’s recent foray into the 2008 presidential race, I’m guessing it is related. Now, I realize I could be wrong, but my hunch is some radical liberal feels so threatened by Palin and her beliefs that s/he felt justified to torch the church.

Searching for information on the arson, I googled several different variations of “atf report on palin church fire.” I was surprised (I shouldn’t have been) to find Fox News is the only major news outlet actively reporting on this story. The first two hits on the search results are links to Fox News stories, nothing from ABC, CBS, NBC, the LA Times, the NY Times. According to this Newsbusters article, I’m not alone in wondering “Why aren’t the mainstream media reporting this story?”

Imagine if the target of this arson had been the church of Jeremiah Wright–Obama’s old church. They’d be all over this story, reporting it as a hate crime. But, apparently its only a hate crime in the eyes of the MSM if it’s committed against groups which primarily identify themselves as liberals. This story doesn’t deserve attention by the MSM even though there were actually people inside the church, including two children, when the fire was set.

I suspect the liberal MSM doesn’t want to cover this story because they simply don’t want to report anything that paints liberals in a negative light. It’s no wonder this recent Zogby poll showed the internet and Fox News are the most trusted news sources.

This started me thinking, if the arson was politically motivated, what type of Democrat would have committed such a crime?

Some are speculating gay rights activists may have started the fire in response to the church’s support of a conference which promised to “help men and women dissatisfied with living homosexually understand that same-sex attractions can be overcome.” One would expect a group that constantly calls for tolerance would be more tolerant toward those with whom they disagree, but Democrats’ demands for tolerance don’t usually extend to toleration of conservative ideology.

Or it could have been activists from the environmental wing of the Democratic party in response to Palin’s call for more drilling in the arctic. They’re known for arson attacks on car dealerships and other institutions they believe damage the environment. You’d think these folks wouldn’t do such a thing considering the large amounts of pollutants released by a burning building, but like I said, they’re known for these sorts of attacks.

Maybe animal rights activists Democrats were motivated by Palin’s affinity for hunting. They’re well known to attack medical laboratories or other institutions they believe practice cruelty to animals. Logic leads one to believe that people who place such high value on animal life would assign a similar value to human life, but often this isn’t the case. The life of the elk Palin might harvest next year is more valuable to these folks than the lives of those two children who were inside the church at the time.

These types of people are the reason the MSM isn’t reporting this story. They don’t want the public to identify the Democratic party with radical elements of these groups and others who primarily identify themselves as Democrats.

Oh, they’re always quick to report an attack on an abortion clinic (which I don’t condone) because those are usually committed by radical elements of the conservative movement. But an attack on a conservative institution by a radical Democrat rates barely a mention, if any at all.

And they act appalled that we don’t trust them?

Obama names Chicago school chief to Education Dept.

Associated Press

CHICAGO – President-elect Barack Obama announced Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago school system, as education secretary Tuesday and declared that failing to improve classroom instruction is “morally unacceptable for our children.”

“When it comes to school reform, Arne is the most hands-on of hands-on practitioners,” Obama said, making the announcement at a school that he said has made remarkable progress under Duncan’s leadership.

“He’s not beholden to any one ideology, and he’s worked tirelessly to improve teacher quality,” Obama said.
