The Danger of EFCA (aka “Card Check”)

Union membership has been declining for decades and a natural result of that declining membership is a decline in the power held by unions in America.  Now that Democrats will control both houses of Congress and the White House, the union bosses are seizing the opportunity to reverse their decades long death spiral.  To achieve this goal, they’ve crafted the benevolently named Employee Free Choice Act (aka “Card Check”).

So, what is this bill whose name makes it sound like something everyone in America would embrace?

Hirsch Roberts Weinstein LLP, a Boston, MA law firm published The Employee Free Choice Act: An Employer’s Survival Guide.  This report explains what changes we can expect to see if this bill is signed into law.

Currently, in order to unionize workers in a particular establishment, the union must obtain signed authorization cards by 30% of the targeted workers in a company.   Once it’s accomplished this, the union files a petition with the National Labor Relations Board.  The NLRB then oversees an election by secret ballot in which the targeted employees choose whether or not to organize.  It’s important to understand that neither union leaders, other employees, nor employers can determine which employees voted for and which voted against organizing.  If more than 50% of employees vote to organize, the NLRB will certify the union as the employees’ exclusive collective bargaining representative.

How will this process change if EFCA is allowed to become law?

The secret ballot will disappear.  If the union collects signed authorization cards from 50% of the targeted workers, there will be no election.  Employees who didn’t sign cards will have no chance to vote, no chance to campaign against organization.  Once the signed cards are collected, the NLRB will be required to certify the union and the company will be required to recognize it as the collective bargaining representative of all employees.

According to Newsmax.com, 59% of Americans oppose EFCA.  The ARRA News Service reports even some left-leaning newspapers know that EFCA will further weaken the already fragile U.S. economy.  But, the following video shows President-elect Barack Hussein Obama’s unequivocal support for eliminating workers’ rights to choose whether or not to unionize their shops by secret ballot.

Most people consider the secret ballot a sacred right, a fundamental right in a democratic society.  It affords voters an opportunity to vote their conscience without fear of intimidation by those who oppose their views.  Removing the secret ballot places physically weaker employees who don’t want a union in the difficult position of changing their vote to avoid a physical confrontation with bigger, stronger coworkers.

But is this really a concern.  I mean, we live in a civilized society right?

Unions have a long history of using violence to intimidate those who don’t stand with them.  The Right to Work Blog documents these cases under it’s Union Corruption and Violence tag.

Still don’t believe this bill will endanger those who don’t want to unionize?  Check out these videos and see if they change your mind.

Nobody is debating the right of workers to organize, but some want to deny the right not to join a union.  Amazing isn’t it?  But that’s exactly why the unions want to force workers to become members–not to choose, but be forced–through this legislation.

The name sounds harmless, but the Employee Free Choice Act is anything but harmless.  If we allow this bill to become law, we are subjecting innocent people (who simply want to work and earn a living to provide for their families) to the violence of strong-arm union bosses who want to strip them of their rights!

Contact your Senators and Representatives and let them know you oppose eliminating the secret ballot and eliminating the right of workers to choose whether or not to hand over control of their lives to union bosses.

When God Created Marines…

I received this in an email from my father and fellow Marine.  Thought I’d pass it along.

When God created the United States Marine, it was into the sixth day of overtime.

An angel appeared, and said, “You’re having a lot of trouble with this one. What’s wrong with the standard model?”

And the Lord replied, “Have you seen the specs on this order?  It has to be able to think independently, yet be able to take orders; have the qualities of both a military mind and a compassionate heart; be a leader of junior Marines and learn from seniors; run on black coffee; handle critical ops without a Military Procedure Manual; be able to manage a difficult subordinate, an irate supervisor and a demanding OIC; & have the patience of a saint and six pairs of hands, not to mention the strength of three its size.”

The angel shook her head slowly, and said, “Six pairs of hands – no way!”

And the Lord answered, “Don’t worry, we’ll make other Marines to help. Besides, it’s not the hands which are causing the problem. It’s the heart. It must swell with pride when other Marines do well, sustain the incredible hardship of combat, beat-on soundly when it’s too tired to do so, and be strong enough to continue to carry on when he’s given all he’s had.”

“Lord”, said the angel touching the Lord’s sleeve gently, “Come to bed!”

“I can’t,” said the Lord. “I’m so close to creating something unique. Already I have one who can complete a 26-mile forced march with full pack, handle a .45 and an M16 with astounding accuracy, conduct land navigation in the dark, and operate field communications.”

The angel circled the model of the Marine very slowly. “It’s too serious,” she sighed.

“But tough,” said the Lord excitedly, “You cannot imagine what this Marine can do or endure.”

“Can it feel?” asked the angel.

“Can it feel!” replied the Lord. “It loves the Corps and country like no other!”

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the Marine’s cheek.  “But there’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you you’re trying to put too much into this model.”

“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord. “It’s a tear.”

“What’s it for?” asked the angel.

“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, frustration, pain, loneliness and pride.”

“You’re a genius!” exclaimed the angel.

The Lord looked at her somberly, and replied, “I didn’t put it there.”

Being a Marine isn’t everything… it’s the ONLY thing.

“Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have made a difference in the world. Marines don’t have that problem.”–President Ronald Reagan, 1985

Merry Christmas and Semper Fi to all my fellow Marines.

May God bless you all.

WND: Kenyan Gov’t Silences Obama Family

Kenyan government imposes gag order on Obama family

No media contact: ‘We are doing this because we want to ensure better flow of information’

View full article on World Net Daily

The Kenyan government has barred unapproved contacts between the media and President-elect Barack Obama’s extended family.

Family members will be required to receive permission from the government before making any public statements about their famous relative, according to the Nairobi Star.

“We are doing this because we want to ensure better flow of information,” Athman Said, an under-secretary in the Ministry of Heritage, told the Obama family in Kogelo.

“The government has decided that you should inform its officers who will be based here if you want to address the media.”

Journalists wishing to speak with the family must first be approved by the government.

Where’s the proof Barack Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the “natural-born American” clause in the Constitution? If you still want to see it, join more than 193,000 others and sign up now!

This is not the first attempt to block press interest in President-elect Obama’s African connections.

Prior to the U.S. election, WND senior staff reporter Jerome R. Corsi was detained in Kenya while investigating Obama’s close ties to the nation’s prime minister, Raila Odinga.

Next in line for bailout money–Zoos and Aquariums

Zoo and Aquariums Look for Slice of Stimulus Pie

Brad Haynes in WSJ–Washington Wire

As the jostling continues over a stimulus package containing upwards of $850 billion in federal spending, it’s hard to find a trade group without a strong opinion about where the money should go.

The latest pitch comes from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, touting the “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects at the nation’s zoos and aquariums that should be eligible for stimulus funding, they argue. The organization has even adopted President-elect Barack Obama’s rhetoric twinning short-term jobs with long-term environmental concerns.

“Investment in these institutions will pay-off twice, first in immediate job creation, and second, in the environmental education of our children for years to come,” AZA President Jim Maddy said in a statement. “Zoos and aquariums are woven into the fabric of American life.”

The organization claims that its roughly 200 institutions generate $7.6 billion in economic activity every year and help to keep 100,000 people employed.

The organization claims that its roughly 200 institutions generate $7.6 billion in economic activity every year and help to keep 100,000 people employed.

AZA spokesman Steve Feldman cited new elephant exhibits in Los Angeles and Cleveland and a polar bear exhibit in Providence, R.I., as examples of major new infrastructure projects ready for federal dollars. Other, less glamorous projects include the aging plumbing systems in parks like the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Some major zoos, like the ones in Dallas and Los Angeles, are fully municipal departments. But most involve some form of public/private partnership, with cities often controlling land and infrastructure while private societies maintain the staff and operations.

We knew it was coming. The floodgates are open and everybody wants their share of “free” money from DC.

Thanks G. W. “Bailout” Bush

Little Piggies’ Activity 12-19-08

We now know Little Piggy Wagoner was in Detroit yesterday, where he gave a press conference at GM headquarters.  I’m not sure if he took questions from reporters because the only video I can find only shows him reading a prepared statement.

Wagoner thanked everyone at GM, his competitors, Little Piggy Gettelfinger, the President, Congress, etc. for their work in getting Bush to approve the taxpayer bailout “loan”.  He went on to say he is confident GM can meet the requirements laid out by the administration.  (I don’t know if he’s considering Gettelfinger’s threats to challenge the UAW’s part of the requirements.)  He also wants GM to lead the country’s recovery during the economic crisis.  (I don’t know how he can lead it when he’s part of what’s holding it down.)

I wasn’t impressed, but here’s the video so you can judge for yourself.

I still can’t find anything on the whereabouts of Little Piggy Nardelli, but he did send a lengthy letter to Chrysler employees yesterday.  Like I said, it’s lengthy so I won’t clutter this post with it.  You can read the text of the letter here.  It doesn’t do anything to make me feel like Bush’s investment in Socialism was money well spent.  He uses a lot of words to say Chrysler is the victim of a global recession and everyone’s been doing a great job and they should simply keep doing so.  Everything will be fine.

Right.

I haven’t found anything new on Gettelfinger today.  Last word I have on him is still that he plans on pressuring Obama to remove the “unfair conditions” Bush’s Socialist agreement makes on the proletariat.

Remember, at TCOT we’re looking for any info readers may find on the Three Little Piggies.  So if you see them out and about, snap a few pictures or video them (if you can do so without being intrusive) and let us know.

Headlines in Detroit, After the Bailout

I just thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the headlines in Detroit to see what they’re thinking after Bush pushed our country even closer to the United Socialist States of America on Thursday.

From the Detroit News:

From the Detroit Free Press:

Perusing these articles, it appears obvious that few, if any, believe this will be the last of the government assistance needed to make GM and Chrysler viable again.  Rather than a bridge to traverse troubled waters, this is an inflatable life preserver with a hole in it.  The two recipients will only be able to stay afloat until the cash runs out, when we’ll most likely be called on to “rescue” them once again.

Please let us know if you see anything of the “Three Little Piggies“; Gettelfinger, Wagoner, or Nardelli.  Top Conservatives on Twitter (#TCOT) is still trying to document how the bailout money is spent.
