Pravda: Here comes 100,000 year Ice Age

#TCOT #diggcons

I really wish these scientist would decide one way or the other.  Just when I’m getting ready to get rid of all my winter clothes and looking forward to tropical weather in Arkansas year round, now it looks like we’ll be trying to survive arctic winters.  What’s a body to do?

</sarcasm>

Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age

from Pravda

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.

Ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age glacial maximums which each last about 100,000 years, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years.

Reid, Dems, and RINO’s block debate on pork laden bill

Digg!
#TCOT #diggcons

Today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) forced a vote to block debate on a $10 billion, pork-laden Omnibus Lands bill. Sixty-six RINO’s and Democrats gave the move enough votes to get around a filibuster by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) who had successfully blocked the legislation last year.

The bill was laden with “wasteful projects” according to Coburn, who for several months has been on a mission to cut Republican (RINO) and Democrat Senators’ pet projects from the bill.

With recent Democratic infighting over President-elect Obama’s warnings that pork will be excluded from his Generational Theft Act of 2009, one can only assume Reid, his Democratic cronies, and the RINOs (who are largely responsible for the dismal performance of the GOP in November’s elections) want to spend all they can, just in case Obama proves true to his word. Reid didn’t comment on Coburn’s charges of waste, but instead stated he was simply trying to get as much accomplished as possible before Obama’s inauguration next week.

Below is a list of all RINO senators who voted with Reid, complete with links to contact them.  I will be contacting each of these senators by phone and email this week to express my displeasure and encourage everyone who wishes to see our elected representatives spend our money responsibly to do the same.

RINOs Who Voted With Reid on Omnibus Lands Bill

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

Senator James Risch (R-ID)

Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN)

Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)

Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME)*

Senator Thad Cohran (R-MS)

Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS)

Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT)

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT)

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY)

Senator Michael Enzi (R-WY)

*Senator Snowe’s website is unavailable as of this writing.

I’ll be emailing each of their offices a list of questions on Friday to give them a chance to explain their vote. I’ll follow up with a phone call to those who don’t respond by Tuesday of next week.  If you have any questions you’d like me to ask, please leave them in the comment thread on this post. I’ll report back with their responses in a follow-up post.

If the D-Day Invasion were reported by today’s media:

June 6, 1944. -NORMANDY, FRANCE-

Three hundred French civilians were killed and thousands more wounded today in the first hours of America’s invasion of continental Europe. Casualties were heaviest among women and children. Most of the French casualties were the result of artillery fire from American ships attempting to knock out German fortifications prior to the landing of hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops. Reports from a makeshift hospital in the French town of St. Mere Eglise said the carnage was far worse than the French had anticipated and reaction against the American invasion was running high. “We are dying for no reason,” said a Frenchman speaking on condition of anonymity. “Americans can’t even shoot straight. I never thought I’d say this, but life was better under Adolph Hitler.”

Hamas Doesn’t Want Peace

Digg!
#TCOT #diggcons

After two weeks of Israel’s Operation Cast Lead, Hamas continues to hold the citizens of Gaza hostage.  Hamas continues to demand a complete Israeli withdrawal before it will discuss a cease fire.  This routine is so familiar it’s amazing the UN, MSM, and anti-Semitic leftists around the world still fall for it.  At least it would be if their real goal didn’t coincide with that of Hamas–Israel’s annihilation.

That’s exactly what it is; the MSM, UN, and anti-Semitic groups around the world have long sided with Hamas and other terror groups for no other reason than the underlying bigotry that blinds them to terrorist acts, human rights violations, and acts of war against the tiny Jewish state.

Bordered by hostile neighbors on three sides and backed against the Mediterranean Sea on the other, Israel has fought wars to repel aggressor states throughout its six decades of existence.  From the time it was recognized as an independent state, Islamic governments and terror groups have called for its annihilation, pitted their armies against Israel, and launched terror attacks designed to maximize civilian casualties.

Virtually every time Israel responds to aggression by its enemies, the UN denounces its actions while ignoring the fact that the violence was initiated by those the UN considers victims of the Jewish state.

Here’s a great post by Dennis Prager that compares Israel with her neighbors and the UN’s treatment of Israel vs. its treatment of the aggressors in this decades-long conflict.  An excerpt of these comparisons:

Number of U.N. agencies that deal only with Palestinian refugees: 1

Number of U.N. agencies that deal with all the other refugees in the world: 1

Number of Jewish states that have existed on the land called Palestine: 3

Number of Arab or Muslim states that have existed on the land called Palestine: 0

Number of Arabs Israel allows to live in Arab settlements in Israel: 1,250,000

Number of Jews Palestinian Authority allows to live in Jewish settlements in Palestinian Authority: 0

Number of U.N. Security Council resolutions on the Middle East between 1948 and 1991: 175

Number of these resolutions against Israel: 97

Number of these resolutions against an Arab state: 4

Number of Arab countries that have been members of the U.N. Security Council: 16

Number of times Israel has been a member of the U.N. Security Council: 0

Hamas is strengthened by UN condemnation of Israeli responses and the terror organization’s strategy of using Palestinian civilians as human shields serves its propaganda purposes when the MSM twists its reporting to lay the blame for every death on Israel instead of where it belongs, with Hamas.

Using schools, mosques, and civilian homes to stage attacks and store weapons makes Hamas directly responsible for every civilian death that results from Israel’s targets of these installations.  In the following video, a Hamas spokesman admits the terror organization uses women, children and the elderly as human shields.

Watch it again if you still buy the UN, MSM, and Hamas line that presents the Palestinian people as victims of Israel.  In their own words, Hamas intentionally places civilians in the line of fire, knowing full well their deaths will be the result.  Using women, children, and the elderly as pawns they sacrifice to achieve their strategic aim–Israel’s annihilation.

Israeli government statement on civilian casualties–“These deaths are indeed a tragedy, and investigations are underway to ensure that further operations continue to avoid civilian casualties.”

Hamas statement from video–“For the Palestinian people, death has become an industry at which women excel, as do all the people living in this land.  The elderly excel at this, and so do the mujahadeen and the children.  This is why they have formed human shields of the women, the children, the elderly, and the mujahadeen…It is as if to say, ‘We desire death as you desire life.’ “

No.  Hamas doesn’t seek peace.  They seek the destruction of Israel and they’re willing to sacrifice as many Palestinian civilians as it takes to accomplish that goal.

More Democratic Corruption: Baltimore Mayor

Digg!
#TCOT #diggcons

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted yesterday on 12 counts of corruption involving undeclared gifts from developer Ron Lipscomb and her use of gift cards that had been donated to the city for use by poor residents.  You can view the state prosecutor’s indictment here.

Not surprisingly, the CNN article linked above makes no mention of  Dixon’s political party.  The MSM is again trying to minimize the damage to the Democratic Party.

The indictment comes after a 3-year investigation of Baltimore City Hall by the State of Maryland.  Others involved in the corruption have already been indicted, including a former campaign manager of Ms. Dixon, Lipscomb who is also formerly dated Mayor Dixon, and others on the City Council.

In June of last year, Dixon lashed out at reporters and prosecuters when parts of the investigation came to light.  Vowing that she would “survive this,” she claimed she could not respond to the damning information made public without damaging her case.

It seems to me if the allegations are unfounded, any response that supported her claim of innocence could hardly do more harm than good for her case.

She was under investigation in January of last year when she endorsed then-Senator Barack Hussein Obama for President.  When she stated she believed Obama “will provide the resources for us to continue with our agenda moving forward,” perhaps she saw an opportunity to grab some of those resources for herself.

Even though the ongoing investigation was public knowledge, Obama lavished praise on Dixon at the time:

Senator Barack Obama said, “As the first woman to hold this office in Baltimore, Mayor Dixon is a trailblazer, and she has spent a lifetime working to make life better for Baltimore’s families. From her years as a Kindergarten teacher to serving as president of the Baltimore City Council to fighting poverty and homelessness as Baltimore’s mayor, Mayor Dixon has worked to bring change that matters in people’s lives. As a working mother herself, she knows firsthand the demands on working families in our country, and she is committed to making policies that work for the future of Baltimore. I look forward to working with her to bring change in the months and years to come.”

Maybe she was trying to get a better feel for how the working poor live when she stole their gift cards that were donated to help them out, but I seriously doubt it.

One might argue that perhaps Obama’s praise of a public officeholder who was under investigation shows a lack of good judgment on the part of the President-elect.

Press release from Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK)

Dr. Coburn Repeats Call for an Open and Transparent Debate on Controversial $10 Billion Omnibus Lands Bill

Urges Senate Leaders to set a new tone, allow debate

January 8, 2009

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today urged Senate leaders to reconsider their decision to block debate and obstruct all amendments to a 1,300 page omnibus lands bill with 164 different provisions. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service has called the package “controversial” because it has angered groups on the left and right with its wasteful earmarks, anti-environmental provisions and provisions that erect new barriers to domestic energy production. Dr. Coburn today filed 13 amendments to the package that target Republican and Democrat projects. Full background on the lands package is here.

“I’m disappointed the Senate Majority Leader has refused to allow Senators the opportunity to improve, amend or eliminate any of the questionable provisions in his omnibus lands bill. When the American people asked Congress to set a new tone, I don’t believe refusing to listen to the concerns of others was what they had in mind. The American people expect us hold open, civil and thorough debates on costly legislation, not ram through 1,300 page bills when few are watching. Blocking debate undermines the public’s trust in Congress and suggests that Senators have something to hide. If Senators want to load this bill with earmarks and deepen our dependence on foreign oil, they should defend those provisions on the floor of the Senate, not hide behind procedural roadblocks,” Dr. Coburn said.

“The American people have a right to know that this package would prioritize the funding of new and egregious pork projects like a road to nowhere in Alaska over critical maintenance of our national parks. The American people also have a right to know that this bill would erect new barriers to American sources of energy. One provision in this bill, which the Majority Leader won’t subject to amendment, would permanently ban access to an enormous natural gas field in Wyoming that would match the annual production of our two largest natural gas producing states, Alaska and Texas. Congress seems to have forgotten that just a few months ago the price of oil hit $148 a barrel and gas cost $4 per gallon. We are once again putting our short-term parochial interests ahead of the best long-term interests of the country,” Dr. Coburn said.

“Finally, while some have complained that I have used every procedural tool to block this bill I would respectfully remind Senate leaders that many more tools remain available to me and any other Senator who wants to exercise his or her rights. Our founders gave each individual Senator extraordinary procedural powers in order to prevent the tyranny of the majority. My goal is to use the rules to encourage debate while, I believe, Senate leaders are using the rules to obstruct debate. Blocking amendments, and attempting to silence the voices of millions of Oklahomans and other Americans who oppose business as usual in the Senate, is not a sustainable governing strategy, particularly when the American people are demanding change,” Dr. Coburn said.

Dr. Coburn submitted the following amendments to Senate leaders earlier this week in hopes of reaching an agreement that would allow the Senate to consider this legislation in a timely manner. Dr. Coburn is confident the average American would expect the United States Senate to at least debate the merit of these amendments, which highlight questionable provisions in the legislation.

PRIORITIES

• No funds may be spent on the new units to the National Park Service, new National Heritage Areas, studies, new Wild and Scenic designations, or new wilderness designations authorized by this Act until the Secretary of the Interior certifies that the maintenance backlog at the Statute of Liberty, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, Gettysburg, Antietam, USS Arizona Memorial, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and the National Mall in Washington, DC have been resolved

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

• Nullify all restrictions on energy exploration and production within the bill

• Strike provision restricting access to a major natural gas reserve in Wyoming

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

• Strike $1 billion California water project to restore 500 salmon

• Strike $3.5 million for the 450th Anniversary of St. Augustine, Florida

• Strike $5 million for the National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Hawaii and Florida

• Strike earmark allowing for the construction of a “road to nowhere” through a national wild life refuge in Alaska

• Strike a provision that would allow a cave institute in New Mexico to receive unlimited federal funding

EMINENT DOMAIN

• Prohibit the use of eminent domain for any provision authorized in the bill

TRANSPARENCY

• Annual report detailing total size and cost of federal property

• Disallow the National Landscape Conservation System authorization from taking effect until an investigation by the Inspector General of the Department of Interior has been completed demonstrating that there was no criminal wrongdoing by the Department (There are allegations that the employees of the National Landscape Conservation System illegally coordinated with advocacy groups to permanently authorize the office)

INDIVDIUAL RIGHTS

• Prohibits restrictions on hunting, fishing, and the possession or use of a weapon, trap, or net in new public lands created by this Act

BORDER SECURITY

• Ensures that nothing in the Act shall prevent or obstruct the planning, construction, operation, or maintenance of a border fence or immigration enforcement

Reid Ignores Economy in Favor of Pork

Press Release from Senator Jim Demint (R-SC)

Reid Ignores Economy to Force Vote on Pork Laden Omnibus Lands Bill

Democrat Majority Leader has allowed a vote on only 1 Republican amendment in last 6 months

January 9, 2009 – Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) made the following statement regarding Democrat Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nevada) decision to hold the first vote of the 111th Congress this Sunday on a massive omnibus lands bill that contains numerous wasteful earmarks:

“This Sunday charade is proof that while President-Elect Obama talks about change and bipartisanship, the Senate Majority Leader is stuck in the partisan past. Instead of focusing on the economy, he has dusted off a pork laden lobbyist-giveaway bill from the previous Congress,” said Senator DeMint.

“This bill is 1,294 pages of pork, land-grabs, and other special interest goodies. According to the Congressional Research Service, many provisions of this bill are quite controversial. Many others are just plain ridiculous, such as $3.5 million to help celebrate the 450th birthday of St. Augustine Florida — in 2015, $5 million for botanical gardens in Hawaii and Florida, a $14 million tropical research institute in Panama, and a $12 million orchid museum in Maryland. And according to Americans for Tax Reform, Reid’s omnibus would hurt American energy by ending exploration on lands that are estimated to provide 300 million barrels of proven oil and 8.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

“Senator Coburn reached out to the Majority Leader last week and asked whether he would be able to offer a limited number of reasonable amendments to the bill, as is his right as a senator. The Majority Leader’s response: Nothing. Not even one amendment to strike wasteful programs.

“The Senate has only voted on one Republican amendment in the last six months, and it is clear that Senator Reid is returning to business as usual.

“The Democrat Leader runs the Senate like a kindergarten. If we don’t follow his instructions, he keeps the whole class after school.

“Tom Coburn has an election certificate from the people of Oklahoma, and he has the same right to the floor as the Majority Leader. He is a hero and he will have my full support every step of the way as he fights for the American taxpayer,” said Senator DeMint.

Rep. Chaffetz (R-UT): Leading by example

Digg!
#TCOT #diggcons

The new freshman Representative Jason Chaffetz, Republican from Utah, will forego the comforts of home while serving in the US House of Representatives. Rather than renting an apartment, he’s decided to sleep on a cot in his office to save money.

“I will save $1,500 a month doing this. I get paid a very handsome salary, no doubt about it, but you know, I’ve got expenses and a future for my kids and my family, too.”–US Representative Jason Chaffetz (R-UT)

In tough economic times, this is leadership by example!

Obama’s on television every day now, claiming that he and big government are our only hope for avoiding economic catastrophe.  He wants to spend our way out of this economic downturn with money we don’t have, money (plus interest) our children (and theirs, and theirs, …) will have to repay in the future.  He hopes his plan will trade our children’s future economic security for our ability to buy more big screen TV’s, high-priced video games, and $500 telephones.

Throughout American history, most generations strived to create a better future for their children, but Obama wants to sell our children into fiscal slavery so we can have our toys.

This is not to give Bush a pass.  Though I supported his tax cuts, I expected spending cuts that never materialized in his administration.  Government grew at an alarming rate under his leadership while the MSM and the left labeled him a radical right wing conservative.  Bush’s spending policies didn’t contain a hint of conservatism and that’s a large part of why we are where we are.

What we’re seeing now in Rep. Chaffetz, is an understanding that Republicans must return to true conservative principles if they want to regain the trust of their constituencies.  After the profligate spending of the past eight years, it’s going to take a lot to convince conservative Americans the GOP is once again on the right path.  This is an excellent start.

Chaffetz is sending a message that any real solution to America’s financial crisis is going to require sacrifice on all our parts.  That sacrifice is what Obama’s plan seeks to avoid in the short term while it pushes the trouble down the road for our children to suffer.

This problem was created by overspending.  Government, businesses, and ordinary Americans all had a hand in it.  It won’t be cured by even more, record breaking, overspending, but by a realignment of American priorities.  Wants and needs are two very different things, but in the last few years we’ve treated them as equivalent.  Americans must once again learn to recognize the difference.

Representative Chaffetz’s actions are showing us the way to truly recover from this crisis.  Hopefully we’ll learn the lesson.

Obama Radio Address 1-10-09

Once again Obama is setting the stage for taking a bad economy, making it worse, and claiming success.

Excerpt.

We start this new year in the midst of an economic crisis unlike any we have seen in our lifetime. We learned yesterday that in the past month alone, we lost more than half a million jobs a total of nearly 2.6 million in the year

In 10 days we’ll officially be under Obama’s thumb, with his party also controlling both houses of Congress.  When these policies turn a crisis into a catastrophe, they’ll try to blame the Republicans, but it’s going to be all on them.  He claims economists from “across the spectrum” insist government must intervene, but these two economists must not be in Obama’s spectrum.  The two researchers from UCLA studied the Great Depression and determined FDR’s approach (whose lead Obama is following) actually made things worse.

Noticeably absent was any mention of the conflict in the Middle East–no mention of Iraq, no mention of the Israeli-Hamas conflict, nothing on foreign policy at all.
