How Much Obamacare Costs the Average Family

by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann at Townhall.com

Whether or not you now have health insurance, Obama’s health care bill will cost you dearly.

If you don’t have insurance, you will be required to buy it. The legislation specifies how much you will have to pay for the coverage before any subsidy kicks in. All during the campaign, Obama kept speaking about affordable coverage. Now it appears that his definition of “affordable” might be a bit elastic.

If your household income is $66,000 a year, slightly above the national average, Obama’s health care bill will require you to spend 12 percent of your income — about $8,000 a year or almost $700 a month — to buy health insurance before you get any federal subsidy.

Even those making less will have to reach deep into their meager resources to satisfy Obama’s statutory requirement. Families scraping by on only $44,0000 a year will have to pay 7 percent of their income (about $3,000) on insurance. Even those making just $33,000 will have to ante up 4.5 percent of their income (about $1,500) for health insurance. The required payments reach so far down the scale that those who are living at the federal poverty level of $22,000 will have to shell out 2 percent of their totally inadequate incomes ($440) for insurance.

That Obama is charging premiums to those living at or on the border of poverty is absolutely incredible! And this from a candidate who pledged that he would not tax the middle class!

If you have insurance, you will get hit by his proposed 40 percent tax on insurance premiums.

  2. We make in the mid $40,000 per year. Everything is up. We don’t have any discretionary income – Nothing extra – 0 – nada per month. Where are we going to get the money to pay Obama Care? And I’ll be 65 by the time I can use it. Uh-Oh, when medicaid/medicare kicks in. Just get it over with and put me in prison.

  3. If you make over 400,000 per year (like Michelle Obama) living on 90% of your income or $360,000 is not so bad. She still has “discretionary funds.” Her kids will still be able to fly around the world, attend private schools and never worry about a college fund. But for those of us who make 40,000 per year, we’re barely able to afford survival essentials now. Since we don’t have “discretionary funds” our kids will simly have to eat less to pay for Obamacare. How long are the poor going to keep abusing ourselves for the principal of “change.” Obama’s changes are self-serving and always have been. There may be a good government medical system but this is not it and we have already spent unbelievable amounts of tax money developing and talking about it. Please stop bleeding us now. Kill Obamacare before it bleeds us to death.

  5. I make 44,000 a year and have a wife and 2 kids. I was paying $800 a month to have health care offered by my employer. That is around 25% of my income. Fortunately my state offers CHIPS which is free healthcare for children, and the income limit is $45,000. Well that got my 2 kids off my employer plan, so I was only paying $300 / month to cover myself and my wife. Not too bad. About 8% of my income. One would expect that you would dedicate a portion of your income to health insurance, no? Car insurance is mandatory for the same reason. According to this article, I will pay even less under Obama’s plan, only 7% of my income or less than $300 / month. To cover my whole family! What’s the problem, then? Sounds reasonable to me. I consider myself “middle class.” Are you people familiar with the European systems outside of the states? What are you talking about “Guns are next”? You’re gonna start a revolution for “having to” insure your family for $300 a month? After this passing, alongside his immigration proposals, Obama is a sure thing for a 2nd term and most people are happy about that. Bar the racists, religious zealots, super-rich and uneducated rural whites.

    • I hope you don’t seriously believe that you will be paying only $300 a month for health insurance? Do some research on the government health care offered in Canada. Anyone with a serious illness such as cancer has to wait their turn in line to get treatment and often they die first. Those with money come to the US for treatment. Half their paychecks go toward health care and taxes and the government can’t collect enough money to cover the cost of the “free” health care so they are now “thinking” about incorporating the American idea of a copay. .

Once the government controls health care they can control the population. Where does it stop? They can force you to get any immunization they feel you should have whether you want to or not. They can put drugs in the immunizations. Think it’s not being done? They already have the capability. Thanks but no thanks. I can make my own decisions about my health and you can keep the change and your Obamacare!

  6. I do not think that it is someone elses problem to take care of my family. Anytime that big government gets involved in the the responsiblity of individuals all it does is cost everyone–some decide “Why not it’s free” to them anyway, why work and take care of your own when someone else will pay for it. Folks NEWS FLASH LIFE IS NOT FAIR GET OVER IT AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN WITH WHAT YOU HAVE— Start with some character and pride in yourself and what made this country what it is . Read some history and see what your founding fathers gave up to have this great country. And you what someone to take care of your health care. Be American and celibrate this 4th but stop riding on the backs of others for your freedom

  7. All of you are not taking into consideration the hidden costs to your wallets!! This bill also increases our tax burden by $800 BILLION and Obama is already hiring 15,000 IRS agents to collect it from YOU!! As well as the fact that it is MANDATORY and that the Fed Govt has no Constitutional authority to do this. The Supreme court danced all around the Constitutional issue and finally avoided it completely in their decision, a decision which in itself is unconstitutional and illegal!
